The V60 Suiren: A Dripper You Assemble Yourself

The Hario V60 Suiren is a demountable pour-over dripper that separates into flat components for storage and travel. It keeps the V60's 60 degree cone angle, single large drain hole and spiral rib pattern, and uses standard V60 size 02 filter papers, so it brews to the same recipes as a conventional V60. The open frame exposes more of the filter to air, which can slightly speed the drawdown.

Most travel drippers work by making a V60 smaller or squashier, and most of them brew slightly worse than the thing they're imitating. The Suiren takes a different route: it asks which parts of a V60 are actually doing the work, keeps those, and throws away the rest.
The answer turns out to be the 60 degree angle, the big hole, and the spiral rib. Everything else is just wall.

What you're left with

Three flat pieces that slot together into a frame. The paper filter provides the wall, which is what it was doing in a solid dripper anyway; the cone was mostly there to hold the paper in the right shape.

The ribs survive intact, running up the frame exactly as they do inside a ceramic V60. They're the reason a V60 tastes like a V60, so it would have been a strange thing to leave out.

Does it brew differently?

Slightly, and in a way that's easy to work with.

More of the filter is exposed to air, so evaporative cooling is a little higher and the drawdown a touch quicker. In practice that means going one step finer on the grind than you would with a ceramic V60, or accepting a marginally lighter cup.

It takes ordinary V60 02 papers, so there's nothing new to buy and no separate consumable to carry.

Packing it

Dismantled, it's flat enough to sit in the pocket of a laptop bag. Paired with the V60 Drip Kettle AIR at £22 and the Mini Mill PLUS at £39, you've got a complete setup that packs down smaller than a pair of shoes.

It's also just a nice object to leave out, which is a legitimate reason to buy a dripper and one people are oddly shy about admitting.

Cleaning

Three pieces means three pieces to wash, which is the honest trade-off against a one-piece cone you can rinse in five seconds. On the other hand, nothing is trapped in an awkward corner, so it cleans thoroughly rather than approximately.
